Enhancing audience engagement with Google News

Google News partnered with Bixa to understand how people across the U.S. discover, choose, and engage with news. The study explored audience segments, news habits, content preferences, and experiences across Google News products.

Through qualitative research in the form of in-depth interviews, digital ethnography, and usability testing, Bixa captured how people consumed news in real time. The research revealed distinct audience needs and motivations, helping Google make more informed decisions about personalization, product development, and audience engagement.

The challenge

Google News wanted a clearer picture of its U.S. audience—one based not only on demographics, but also on people’s behaviors, motivations, and attitudes toward the news.

The research focused on four key questions:

  • What distinct types of news consumers use Google News? (audience segmentation)

  • When, where, and why do people check the news? (consumer behavior and content preferences)

  • How do users experience Google News across different products and platforms? (user experience)

  • How could Google create more relevant experiences for each audience segment? (audience-driven product strategy)

Our approach

Bixa combined qualitative market research with behavioral data to understand people’s everyday news habits.

  • Diary studies with screen-shared videos: Over 4 days, every time a participant checked the news, they were asked to record their screens, talk through their process, and take a micro-survey about their journey. This provided over 5,000 timestamped videos, bridging the gap between qualitative and quantitative research.

  • Cross-platform behavior mapping: We captured when, where, and how users engaged with different news platforms, providing insights into feature preferences and unmet product needs.

  • Usability testing + in-depth interviews: Moderated research sessions explored how people navigated Google News products, what they found useful, and where they experienced friction.

  • Audience segmentation: Bixa identified distinct news-consumer segments based on behaviors, motivations, mindsets, and media habits—not demographics alone. For each audience, we delivered actionable recommendations for driving adoption, increasing engagement, and aligning future product development with real user needs.

What we accomplished

More relevant news experiences

The research showed how Google News could tailor it’s different surfaces, features, content, and notifications to the needs of different audience segments, creating more useful and intuitive digital experiences.

Clearer product direction

Bixa translated audience insights into practical recommendations for Google’s product roadmap. These recommendations helped teams prioritize improvements without adding unnecessary complexity.

Audience-led growth strategy

By mapping specific audience needs with different news products Google maintains, Bixa’s research gave marketing and product teams a clearer framework for reaching the right users with more relevant experiences, thus boosting retention and engagement KPIs.

Highlighted tools & techniques

Journey mapping

Maps the customer experience from beginning to end to show what people are doing, thinking, feeling, and needing at each stage. It pinpoints moments of friction, unmet needs, and opportunities to improve the experience—and helps teams see how individual touchpoints connect to the bigger picture.

Wireframing

Translates research findings into a visual blueprint for a website, app, or digital experience—showing how content, navigation, features, and interactions should come together. Wireframes make recommendations tangible, giving teams something concrete to evaluate, test with users, and refine before investing in full design and development.

UX testing

In this method, we directly observe people using your product—or going through their own process for completing an action in a digital setting. We see what actually happens, not what we hope happens, revealing friction, confusion, broken flows, and unmet expectations before they cost you customers.
